Understanding Moles
Moles are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. While many moles are harmless, it is important to check for changes that may indicate abnormal or suspicious features.
At HEMAC Aesthetic & Skin Clinic in Hawthorn East, our doctors assess moles using a dermatoscope, a specialised lens that helps differentiate between normal moles and those that may require further medical investigation.
How are moles treated?
If a mole appears suspicious, a sample (biopsy) may be taken for examination under a microscope. In some cases, a surgical excision with a margin of clearance is recommended, performed under local anaesthetic.
For harmless moles, cosmetic removal options may include:
- Shave excision – removal of raised moles at the surface of the skin.
- Laser treatment – using medical-grade laser to reduce pigmentation in certain types of moles. Multiple sessions may be required depending on the mole’s size, colour, and location.
What to Expect
- Sessions required – a shave excision is usually completed in one visit. Laser treatments often require several sessions.
- Downtime – most patients can resume normal activities on the same day. A small scab may form and naturally shed within about a week.
- Risks and side effects – all procedures carry risks such as scarring, infection, or pigment changes. These will be explained at consultation.
Why mole checks are important
Not all moles are suitable for cosmetic removal. A medical assessment is required first to rule out concerning or cancerous features. If a mole shows suspicious changes, referral for biopsy or excision is essential for patient safety.
Mole Removal – Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser mole removal safe?
Laser may be an option for certain benign moles, but a doctor must first assess suitability. Suspicious moles are not treated with laser and require medical investigation.
Will one treatment be enough?
Shave excision is usually completed in a single session. Laser treatments may require multiple sessions depending on the mole.
Is there downtime after mole removal?
Most patients can return to work or daily activities the same day. A scab may form and fall off within about a week.
Can all moles be removed for cosmetic reasons?
No. Only harmless, benign moles may be considered for cosmetic removal. Suspicious or changing moles must be investigated medically.
What risks should I be aware of?
Possible side effects include scarring, pigment changes, or infection. These risks will be explained by your practitioner during consultation.
